For the first time in the history of St. Augustine College, two mothers and their two children had the joy of graduating the same day.

Mother and daughter did it together

Elvia Martinez and her daughter Jasmine shared that joy by earning both the Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. “I might not have graduated if it weren’t for my daughter who encouraged me to study and especially for the ugly experience we both had when we went to work at a factory. In that place they treated us badly, and they paid us badly. It was three horrible months that made us think that it was best to go to college to have a better future, “said Mrs. Elvia Martinez, 54.

“Twice I tried to enroll at SAC, but I was discouraged because I thought that because of age it was not for me, and my housewife obligations. But when we went to register my daughter Jasmine, she was the one who encouraged me to study and it was the best decision I made, “she said.”I was afraid I could not continue studying after having left school 20 years ago. But my children helped me and motivated me. Now I am very proud to have graduated and to see results because I already have job offers, “revealed the mother of five children.

Her 24-year-old daughter Jasmine, who has a 10-month-old baby said she did it thinking about her family’s future. “The graduation next to my mom, is a dream, a great emotion. We are the first to graduate in the family and I hope to inspire my brothers because I am encouraging them to enroll at St. Augustine College who did a lot for us. “

“I did not want to go back to work in a factory where we were treated poorly. Graduating was hard and I had to sacrifice a lot of things, but I did not want to go back to those jobs where they once dismissed me because I got sick, “she said. “I realized that if I did not study, my life would be that way. And I didn’t want that for myself or my family. Now I have good opportunities, I have been told about nurseries and other jobs. I’m going to start working soon, “she concluded.

Mother and son, source of inspiration

Ma Sáenz and her son Luis Sáenz are convinced that they are an example to follow. And they are not mistaken because they have graduated the same day at the same College. She earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education and he earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Science, with a concentration in Psychology.

“It’s an emotion difficult to describe. Graduating was a bit complicated but not difficult. Here we are, we succeeded, we are a good team, we made a great effort and it was done, “said Ma Sáenz with her emotions at peak at the end of the graduation ceremony.” I started first at St. Augustine and then I inspired my son to follow because there was a lot of flexibility and good counselors. We had to learn to have discipline, to combine the tasks of the College, my role as a mother and student. I took time off. I think we are an example that when there is desire, yes you can. It is quite hard, but the satisfaction of success is very great, “she concluded.

His son Luis, his chest swollen with pride, said that “without my mother’s support, desire and strength, I would not have graduated. This is the most beautiful reward a child can have: graduating at the same time with my mother. I am proud of everything for her, she deserves it and I am happy to give her this joy, “he said.” I’m not thinking of stopping, next semester I will return to school to begin my degree in Psychology”.
