Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management

Our comprehensive Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management degree program will prepare you to work in the wide and growing field of hospitality, including Culinary Arts; Accounting; Business Management; Legal and Ethical Issues; Human Resources; Lodging; Management of Food Services; Management of Special Events; Industrial Psychology; and Management of Information Systems. Hospitality and tourism careers have you talking and working with a wide variety of individuals. Hospitality management jobs are constantly evolving and our hospitality management degree grows with it. 

Built on a liberal arts foundation (found in our academic catalog) with a strong business curriculum, the B.A. in Hospitality Management program features exposure to culinary arts and hotel management with a curriculum that covers the major areas of the hospitality industry. Your senior seminar and capstone project allows you to research specialty areas, including international tourism; gaming; sports hospitality; amusement parks; and ethnic/global hospitality. From hotel management school to food preparation courses, this degree prepares you to work closely, as well as independently, with staff, supervisors, businesses, and customers in diverse organizations around the world.

As a graduate of the B.A. in Hospitality Management program, you will be prepared to:

  1. Be a competent business professional in the hospitality industry and competitive in the job market, with special emphasis on multicultural understanding and practice in a global industry.
  2. Collaborate as well as lead, with many different types of people, solve problems quickly and concentrate on details, have initiative and self-discipline, effective communication skills, and the ability to organize and direct the work of others.
  3. Have a comprehensive knowledge of lodging and food and beverage service operations, including customer service; reservations; purchasing and accounting systems; safety and security; design; event planning; maintenance and repair; personnel practices; and business ethics, legal requirements, management and finance.
  4. Step into a position in the hospitality industry in management or operations or as a leader or owner for a lodging establishment; events and meeting management; restaurant; food service; sales; or related business field.

The perfect job for somebody who knows how to take control and take charge, a travel agent plans trips. From booking the flights to reserving the hotels, you get to take control and make somebody’s life a little easier. 

In-House Event Planner 

Speaking of control, an in-house event planner makes sure that events, from conferences to parties, are moving without a hitch. This involves booking clients, planning the schedule, and planning out a post-event cleaning of the event space. 

Executive Chef 

Hospitality management jobs aren’t just out of the kitchen. Executive chefs work in hotels, on cruises, in restaurants, and more. An executive chef’s roles are ordering food supplies, ensuring the quality of food, and planning menus. 

Spa Director 

Coming in with leisure and relaxation, a spa director is all about making sure their customers are as stress-free as possible. Overseeing schedules, appointments, and maintaining inventory, a spa director does all the behind-the-scenes work to make sure everything runs smoothly.

In collaboration with the College of Lake County, a new hospitality undergraduate program, a BA in Hospitality, is now offered from St. Augustine College, and is located at the University Center of Chicago, a bright, beautiful facility with up-to-date learning technology in the heart of Chicago. Students will need to take some additional general education courses at the College of Lake County. They will need to take 32 credit hours (8 courses of 4 credit hours each) to receive their BA in hospitality management. This part of the hospitality management curriculum could be completed in one calendar year, (after completing the required general education)

Following the structure of the St. Augustine pedagogy, we believe in small classes and individualized instruction and want this program to follow that motto, prioritizing the students and their abilities

The goal of this Bachelor’s degree in hospitality is to work directly with the associate degree in hospitality offered through the College of Lake County Community College. Students will only need to take 32 credit hours from St. Augustine College in order to achieve this bachelor’s degree.  Students will have the option to either take their classes in person at the University Center of Chicago or remotely.
